How to detect if you have a water leak at your house?
Water leaks can appear in many different places throughout the house and outside of the house!
Inside the house:
– Under the ground and hidden water pipes.
– Behind the walls
– Through out the ceilings.
– Kitchen.
– Bathrooms.
– Toilets
– Exterior pipes.
Water leaks in the kitchen:
Water leaks in kitchens are generally found in four areas; around the sinks, among the supply pipes at the base of the sinks, behind the dishwasher and the concealed water pipes behind the wall. Faucet leaks are also a very common problem that occurs.
Consealed Water leaks occurring in the kitchen behind the wall can burst, corrode and leak over time, even the smallest of water leaks seeping out of a joint as wear and tear. You may notice this in the form of dampness and dark spots on the wall. Under the sink behind the supply pipes in the wall in a very common area that we locate concealed water leaks with our water leak detection Investigation tecniques, process of elimination methods and specialised equipment.
Dishwasher pipes can over leak over time. Sometimes due to the hoses splitting over years of use. When dishwashers get moved around for cleaning or even bumped, the water supply hoses can come loose, split and need repair by a licencsed plumber. At times this can also happen with the dishwasher waste hoses.
Tapware can also leak over time. Leaking from the stem, cartridge if its a mixer tap or the jumper valves, washers, body washes and orings all being potential causes of tapware in the kitchen causing leaks. Some of these leak can be obvious above the sink and some can be difficult to see due to the leak can seep down undernath the sink whereby you will need to check under the sink for any dampness, puddles or marks.
For sinks, examine the lower part of the countertop for any changes in the particleboard. This is specifically noticeable if you have a plastic laminate countertop. If it has been affected by water, it will be swollen, dark and even spongy to the touch.
To confirm if there is a water leak, you could pour some water slowly along the base of the faucet and the edges of the sink, where the sink and the countertop are joined and then check to see if the water drips down at the bottom. This is a clear sign that water is readily seeping through a small space in between the faucet base and the countertop sink.
Over time constant splashes of water can eventually loosen up the joint at which the faucet meets the countertop, allowing for seeping of small amounts of water to the area below over a period of time.
You can also take the time to inspect the area under the cabinets for dampness, water puddles and rotting floor boards, all of which are likely to be related to a water leak. This is largely as a result of leaks from the supply pipes inside the cabinet, these aren’t noticed until long after they have started dripping.
Another easy way to spot a leak in a two story house is to check the ceiling below the kitchen for any wet, damp or dried stains. After dripping non-stop for a long time, the water seeps through the floor joints and goes into the ceiling board, coming into sight as a wet mark that may grow into a large puddle.
To test your water supply abd drain pipes, run a dry cloth or paper towel over the edge of each pipe, around the slip joint and shutoff valve, including the water drains from the sink bowl. Areas having a leak will leave small marks on the cloth. This may be a sign of a water leak.
Bathroom Water Leaks
If you have a feeling or have noticed signs of a water leak in your bathroom on the Gold Coast, you can check for peeling paint or wallpaper both on the inside and outside walls next to the bathroom. This can be a result of a continuous passage of water though the caulk between the tiles, especially for bathtubs attached to the wall on any side. The water then moves into the connected wall, loosening the bonds attaching paint and wallpaper to the wall, later leading to the peeling.
It’s important to look out for loose or falling wall tiles on the wall next to the shower/bathroom. This can be caused by water seepage. Leaking from the shower pipes behind the wall exposes the tiles to water which seeps through the grout and caulk and loosens them over time.
You can also check for mould growth in certain places of the bathroom, sometimes those next to the bathtub/shower pan. Moulds and mildew are known to thrive in dark places with moisture and a bathroom with leaking water pipes is certainly a common place. If you find any that are constantly growing, they can be a sign of possible concealed leaks.
Check for space between the bathtub and floor. Bathtubs can leak in and around the waste pipes. With continuous exposure to leaking water, the caulk between the tub and the floor can create erosion, resulting in gaps that let water through to the bottom of the flooring under the tub.
Underground and hidden water leaks:
Sometimes a leaking pipe may be below the ground or hidden behind a wall. That includes ceilings, under concrete slabs, basements and exterior pipes on the house.
Discovering and establishing a hidden pipe as the root cause of a leak is not always easy, but here are some ways that may help you find it.
Carry out the meter test. First, check the meter measuring the water being used in the house and notice how it moves. Then turn off every faucet and toilet, plus any other appliances connected to water within the property. Check the meter again to see if it is turning over. If it is, you have a leak somewhere in the house, or in your property and it could be underground. Otherwise, the meter shouldn’t move at all once every appliance is turned off.
Puddles and damp areas are also imminent signs of leaks in underground or hidden pipes such as those behind a wall. It is common to find moulds and mildew growing on such walls or floors and if you see them, If you see this there is a possibility of a leak in the pipe behind that area.
